Yorkshire Water Takes A HawkEye View On Pollution

Over 100 potential pollution incidents have been avoided, thanks to innovative technology created by Yorkshire Water.

A revolutionary new system to monitor sewer levels has been piloted by the water company. The HawkEye device, a monitor that measures sewer levels and uses on-board mobile phone technology, has been developed to help tackle the serious issue of pollution.

The HawkEye system has been developed to help the company monitor its combined sewer overflows (CSO's) which are a critical part of its 30,000km sewerage network. CSO's which have been blocked from sewer debris such as fat, nappies and sanitary wear are now visible using this system, allowing the company to react before any serious environmental impact occurs.

The pilot is currently being carried out in Leeds and Huddersfield. HawkEye detects anything untoward and sends a signal via the mobile phone which raises an alarm triggering employees to investigate the CSO.

The water company, which launched a pollution prevention awareness campaign earlier this year, encouraged members of the public to think about what they put into the sewer and in turn, consider their own contribution to protecting the environment. It too recognises that it has a massive part to play in reducing pollution.

Yorkshire Water waste water business director Graham Dixon said: "The creation of this new technology has become a vital component of our pollution prevention strategy. Following the success of the initial trials, the system has been rolled out to over 600 CSO's.

"This development has offered us a real solution to a problem affecting both our customers and the environment."

The innovative approach to pollution prevention has already been shortlisted for a Utility Industry Achievement Award within the Information Technology section. An awards ceremony to be held later this year will determine the success of the HawkEye initiative.

"We would still urge members of the public to assist by informing us should they see pollution in a water course, be it a stream, canal or river. This will enable us to act quickly and minimise the impact of the pollution on the environment," added Mr Dixon.
