The new Intelligent Water Solution software package, which is now available for Vaconís popular NX series ac variable speed drives, dramatically reduces the need for costly and inconvenient manual clearing of blockages in pumping systems that work with contaminated liquids. This is an important benefit especially for pumps installed in remote locations, which require expensive call outs to deal with blockages.

Specifically designed to minimise the incidence of pump blockages caused by fouling and to clear any blockages that do occur without the need for manual intervention, the new software provides anti-rag and automatic flushing options, both of which can be easily configured by users to match the exact needs of their application.

Operating in conjunction with the sophisticated PI control software that is a standard feature of all NX series drives, the anti-rag feature automatically senses when the pump is becoming blocked. It then reverses the pump to clear the blockage before restoring normal operation. The user can set the time for which the pump runs in reverse and the maximum reverse torque, which is often higher than the pumpís normal operating torque.

The number of anti-rag (reverse/forward) cycles that the drive will perform in an attempt to clear a blockage can also be set. This procedure clears a very high proportion of blockages but, if the preset number of anti-rag cycles is exceeded and the blockage is still present, the drive trips to prevent damage to the pump.

The automatic flushing option complements the anti-rag feature and is particularly useful for pumps that operate much of the time below maximum speed. Automatic flushing periodically increases the speed of the pump to maximum to dislodge the build up of contaminants, which reduces the risk of blockages occurring. The time period between flushing operations and the duration of each operation can be readily set.

Vaconís new Intelligent Water Solutions software package is compatible with all NX series drives and is easy to install with free-of-charge loading/commissioning software. Ancillary functions provided by the package include a log that stores information about the number of anti-rag cycles that have been performed, as an aid to analysing pump and system performance.

To assist users in assessing the benefits of using ac variable speed drive technology, all NX series drives have the ability to calculate and display the value of energy saved compared with fixed-speed motor operation. The savings can be displayed in GB Pounds, Euros, or US Dollars, along with calculated details of CO2 emissions. These features make it easy to determine the payback on the investment made in the drive, and to monitor carbon footprint.
