Three Valleys Water drink to Allibert Helix Tanks

Posted: Friday 3rd March 2006

The UK’s largest water only supply company has ensured continuing water quality and safety for thousands of homes in England, with new helically wound, seamless bulk chemical storage tanks from Allibert Helix.

Three Valleys Water approached Allibert Helix to provide bulk chemical storage tanks as part of its water treatment facility upgrade at Iver in Buckinghamshire, which draws water from the River Thames. It required a facility to safely hold and deliver liquid sodium hypochlorite and sodium bisulphite for water treatment.

Its Iver site had previously used the industry standard treatment process of gaseous chlorine and sulphur dioxide, with the chemicals stored on-site under pressure. This meant the works was defined as a top ‘Tier 1’ site under the Control of Major Accidents and Hazards (COMAH) regulations, which Three Valleys was keen to move away from as part of its ongoing risk management and environmental programme.

Allibert Helix supplied four 6000 gallon tanks for sodium hypochlorite storage and three for sodium bisulphite, manufactured in accordance with the British Standard EN12573 (The Manufacture of Thermoplastic Tanks) and designed for a life of at least 20 years. All the tanks were produced using the Allibert Helix winding process that creates a stress-free cylinder with distinctive rings on the outside and a smooth finish on the inside.

Three Valleys Water, part of the Veolia Water group, delivers more than 870 millions litres of water a day to over three million customers, making it the largest water supply company in the UK. It supplies customers in Bedfordshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, Surrey, along with several west London Boroughs.

Allibert Helix tanks are used to store over 400 million litres of chemicals throughout the world. Manufactured using the proven Helix process, UV-stabilised high density polyethylene (HDPE) or polypropylene (PP) is helically wound around a mandrel to form a vessel free from the stress characteristics that can create in-service problems with conventionally fabricated cylindrical tanks. They offer a maintenance-free service life and, because of their size-to-weight ratio, and lightweight materials are easier to handle on-site.
