Sick’s New LFP Cubic Fluid Level Probe Uses Microwave Technology to Achieve Cost-saving Accuracy

SICK UK is launching the LFP Cubic, a versatile new fluid level probe which offers a cost-saving solution for accurate level detection and measurement in both oil- and water-based fluids. Universally adaptable and quick to commission, the new LFP Cubic is expected to find a wide range of uses in the water and process industries.

The LFP Cubic’s guided microwave technology means its measuring performance is not affected by the density or conductivity of the fluid, making it consistently accurate even for deposit-forming and foaming liquids.

“With the LFP Cubic, Sick has developed a robust, low-maintenance solution to the problems often encountered by engineers needing to monitor fluid levels using lower-budget sensors,” explains Darren Pratt, Sick’s UK instrumentation product specialist.

“The LFP Cubic does not have the maintenance drawbacks of multiswitch point float systems, or the sensitivity to conductivity changes of capacitive sensors, yet is marketed at a similar price point to them.”

The LFP Cubic has a stainless steel probe with a maximum length of up to 2metres that can be easily changed or cut to length. Commissioning is also made easier by the sensor’s ability to simulate levels even when no fluid is present.

With the LFP Cubic, Sick has also overcome one of the traditional drawbacks of microwave technology by reducing the deadband to just 25 mm, meaning the LFP Cubic can be used in small vessels.

The sensor’s easy to read display gives real-time level and status information. The analogue output is flexible, using either 4-20mA or 0-10V switchable, with two PNP outputs. Connection to fieldbus networks is straightforward via an optional module

The LFP Cubic is suited to a wide range of process conditions with temperatures from

-20°C to +100°C and pressures from -1 to 10 bar. The sensor’s tough enclosure is rated IP67 and its robust design offers a long service life which minimal wear and maintenance.

“We believe the flexibility and adaptability of the LFP Cubic will offer time and cost savings across a broad range of industries, making it a universal solution our customers can rely on. The LFP Cubic will be an advantage anywhere a reliable level probe is needed in fluids such as coolants, grinding and hydraulic oils, or in blends containing cleansing, degreasing and cleaning agents, for example,” Darren added.

The LFP Cubic is a sister product to the LFP Inox fluid level probe launched in 2011, which is designed for use in hygienic environments.
