Saint-Gobain PAM Access Covers and Gratings Kitemarked to EN124 2015

Posted: Thursday 1st February 2018

Saint-Gobain PAM UK has announced that its comprehensive range of ductile iron access covers and gratings has been confirmed as fully complaint with the requirements of EN124 2015 after completion of third party verification by the BSI.

Says Paul Thompson, Marketing Manager for Saint-Gobain PAM, "We have taken time to fully review the importance and scope of each of the changes throughout the standard to ensure that we achieve not just initial accreditation, but ongoing compliance. We have a large and complex product portfolio, which required a significant investment in time and resource and to keep pace with the enhanced testing and sampling regime, we commissioned the construction of a bespoke testing machine and facility."

Part 1 of EN124 defines the scope of the standard and classifies what the products are used for, its materials, the design and performance requirements and the testing regime to ensure that they perform to a minimum level.

Parts 2-6 are specific to the different types of material used to manufacture access covers and gratings, with part 2 of the standard covers gully tops and manhole covers, detailing the requirements of products made of cast iron and contains the specific tests relevant to this.

Continues Thompson, "It is important not to only rely on EN124 2015 when putting together a specification, but to consider the nature of the application for each installation.

"A good example is that the BS EN 124 load bearing test is a static load test applied to the cover for 30 seconds and then repeated incrementally over time. The test records and reports on the condition of the cover top. The problem is that a static load test does not replicate in service operational conditions. Any installation failures that do happen are normally as a result of dynamic or transitional loading, depending on traffic conditions.

"In practice, industry and client specific standards and guidance are often used to try and encompass all aspects of product selection, installation and performance of a product.

"With the introduction of any new standard often uncertainty remains about its interpretation, adoption and implementation by the market and our customers. As market leaders we need to educate owners, specifiers, installers and operators of our products on the key elements of the standard. We will achieve this through a CPD accredited module, highlighting the changes and how the standard acts as the basis for a performance based specification. Entitled Access Covers and Grating Standards and Specification Overview and Guidance - the course is available either at Saint-Gobain PAM or can be held at an organisation's own premises."
