Radius Systems graduate engineer, Andrew Jenner, has won the Pipeline Industries Guild (PIG) 2010 Short Paper Competition, with his presentation Innovation in the Field of Effluent Pipelines.

Andrew’s presentation discussed the importance of innovation in any company’s bid for success. It highlighted how Radius Systems had used innovation to great effect in the sewer industry to develop its UltraFortis product range. It also discussed how bringing in new design and prototyping techniques allow Radius Systems to offer customers optimised design solutions and improved efficiencies. In some cases, these shortened the time from drawing board to working prototype to a matter of days.

The annual competition, held in April at United Utilities, invites young engineers to present a paper on a subject relevant to pipeline technology. Entrants must be under 35 years old and are judged by senior Guild members on presentation skills, timekeeping, technical competence and response to Q&A. This year’s event was limited to eight entrants and attracted over 30 Guild members. Other presentations were made by AESL, GL Noble Denton, United Utilities and Northumbrian Water.

Since achieving an engineering degree at Loughborough University, Andrew has successfully completed a two-year graduate training course with Radius Systems.

Andrew said of the competition: “This is a great event for young engineers like me to increase our profile and learn more about the other companies in our industry. The standard of presentations was very high on the day, making the win even more unexpected! The trophy has pride of place on my windowsill and I am looking forward to attending the Annual Dinner in November.”

In addition to receiving the trophy, Andrew wins £250 and two tickets with accommodation to the PIG Northern Branch Annual Dinner at Harrogate.
