Premier radio AMR solution for non-utility metering applications

Posted: Wednesday 17th December 2008

Stream Measurement of Oldham through their distributor relationship with one of the world’s leading water and energy meter suppliers, Sensus Metering Systems, have introduced in to the non-utility market the latest AMR technology – Sensus((S))cout

Sensus((S))cout delivers an ‘end-to-end’ solution because every element of the AMR system – meters, transponders and data transmitters, collectors and interrogation software – is designed by Sensus and supported by Stream. In effect, Sensus((S))cout offers an unbroken and seamless data chain from the meter point via the IT system through to the billing process.

The result is an AMR system that is not only ideally suited to new applications…it is also backwards compatible, enabling landlords/property management companies to benefit in existing meter networks from the cost and performance gains associated with AMR.

Sensus((S))cout has been specially developed to provide mobile and remote reading of meters in high density residential areas and in lower density commercial/industrial locations.

Each water meter is equipped with an integrated or ‘plug and play’ transponder that sends consumption information to external data collectors. A handheld unit is then used to read meters simultaneously from the same point as part of a mobile ‘walk-by’ system.

Sensus((S))cout is an 868MHz bidirectional flexible radio system developed specifically by Sensus for ‘horizontal’ and ‘vertical’ meter reading – in other words for the mobile and remote reading of meters (residential water meters, bulk water meters and heat meters) in areas of high building density (urban streets and high rise buildings).

Sensus((S))cout enables consumption meters to be read by radio using a variety of methods – using hand-held PSION WA Pro units (with integrated radio modem) running DOKOM Mobile software, through to fully automated fixed network solutions, with read frequencies set to suit each individual application. When using the PSION WA Pro to collect the data the information is then transferred via a docking station through to a PC, running the corresponding DOKOM software,. This data can then be incorporated into the billing system.

Stream Measurement see one of the key benefits of the system is the flexibility of the system as it can connect cold water meters (residential and bulk) and hot/chilled water energy meters within the same architecture using either radio or Mbus wired formats. This creates a versatile platform for ‘refurb’ or new build apartments/office complexes as it easily integrates into BMS.

Andy Maber Director of Stream says of Sensus((S))cout

“Real AMR in action that works, it’s already being used across a number of utilities in the south of England and we have just been awarded a housing scheme numbering 120 dwellings in Wales that will install energy meters and Sensus((S))cout AMR as a walk by solution. Our clients are responding very favourably to the technology, its ease of install, use and performance, it’s a really exciting extension to our metering portfolio...”
