Polythene UK launches new flame retardant scaffold solution

Posted: Wednesday 14th July 2010

Polythene UK, the largest broker of polythene film and bags in the UK, is launching a new flame retardant scaffold sheet wrap. The new material, which is available from today onwards, will provide heat and fire protection, but more importantly provide a safer working environment that can potentially save lives.

“Typical scaffold sheeting burns to a cinder in just a few minutes, helping to rapidly spread a fire, generating huge amounts of blinding and choking smoke, and presenting a serious obstacle to escape, yet it’s something that’s almost never considered,” commented James Woollard, Polythene UK’s Managing Director.

“Our flame retardant scaffold sheet wrap works by preventing the spread of flame, if caught on fire it would put the flames out itself immediately, and more importantly would not give off any toxic fumes in doing so, giving vital extra minutes in the event of a blaze.”

Figures from The Fire Statistic Monitor, published by Communities and Local Government showed that for 2008/09 there were 430 fire-related deaths within both domestic and non-domestic premises. Plus, according to research by the ABI the cost of fire damage now stands at a record level. This time last year insurers paid out £639 million - £3.6 million every day – for damage caused by fires, the highest half yearly figure ever.

James comments: “Fire kills hundreds of people every year at home, at work, and in commercial environments and our new scaffold sheet wrap is a small investment for something that could literally save your life and the lives of others.”

The new flame retardant scaffold sheet wrap is a patented fully LPS accredited polythene film. The material fully encapsulates the area, weather proofing, eliminating dust and debris and helping to avoid accidental or malicious fire damage.

James adds: “Suppliers of building products all have to pass stringent flame retardant tests, and I strongly believe they should therefore be working in an area that is also flame proof. It just makes sense. And now we have the ideal solution. No responsible tradesman should be without it.”

The scaffold sheet wrap is supplied on light, easy-to-carry rolls and is very durable. The material has passed site tests with winds recorded at 140 miles per hour without needing to be refixed, offering better protection from falling objects ensuring that workers and pedestrians who may be walking near the base of the scaffolding are fully protected.

The award-winning firm based in Witney, Oxfordshire, provides polythene products to many sectors including the food, furniture, and metals industries as well as the construction industry and has become one of the fastest growing companies in UK packaging.

Polythene UK’s ‘flame retardant’ polythene can also be used with the company’s ‘Polylite’ and ‘Polyair’ materials, which respectively provide significant cost savings as well as many ‘eco-friendly’ polythene solutions.
