Mobexx launches new lone-worker safety solution for engineers on site

Posted: Wednesday 18th August 2010

Mobexx, the Runcorn-based rugged mobile computing specialist, has launched a revolutionary lone worker safety solution for engineers working in hazardous and remote environments. The new computerised “Work-Alone” solution provides a clear view of field engineers and their vehicles. This keeps them safe and connects them to the office, wherever they may be working.

Office-based staff use the Work-Alone system for live monitoring of mobile engineers and their vehicles on computer screen. This gives complete information for each vehicle, including its duty status and a countdown to the engineer’s next update (check-in). This frees them from constantly contacting engineers by telephone or radio to find out if they are safe and how jobs are progressing.

The system was designed and developed by Mentor Engineering, a leading US mobile asset management solutions provider. The system is believed to be the first of its kind to be made available to the UK market.

Mobile staff use a mobile phone or an intrinsically-safe pendant to check-in to the system. This activates the system and triggers a countdown to the next required status update. Those companies equipping their engineers with lone-worker pendants can also choose to send automatic reminders at preset intervals before their required check-in times.

When an engineer misses a check-in, the system creates an automatic “emergency event”, which highlights the vehicle on the office computer screen. The office staff then contact the engineer to check on their safety or can send an emergency response team. Emergency events are also created by pressing the pendant's panic button or if the pendant is motionless for a preset time. The system can also provide automatic email alerts of the missed check-in or panic event to managers.

Managers may use the system to produce reports using the lone-worker monitoring data, enabling them to evaluate their fleet's performance according to their lone-worker policy.
