Measured risk, measured response

Posted: Monday 15th April 2013

Lake Twiste is situated in the heart of Germany. The lake is a popular tourist attraction and swimming in the lake is one of the many things that visitors can do.

The local Town Council, the Regional Health Authority, and Hessen State Authority work hard to ensure that visitors can enjoy the environment at all times.

The Lake has an entirely natural population of filamentous algae, which are unpleasant to swim in and can make the water look dirty and unsafe. However the filamentous algae are completely harmless and pose no risk to health at all. There is always a possibility of unsafe blue- green algae appearing which would pose a risk to swimmers and those enjoying the waters edge.

So the work to monitor the lake needs to consider the aesthetics of the water, and the safety of those who get near it.

It is possible to see algae in the lake, and areas can be cleared for bathing by mechanically raking out the material. However it needs more than the eye to check if there is any risk to health from blue green algae. This is where the BBE Algaetorch comes into its own. It is a portable unit which can be taken to the point of any complaint or comment. The risk to health can be measured there and then. Measured risk allows a measured response. Doing the right thing straight away is very likely to be the lowest cost, and safest way to manage things.
