Infection Control and Ice Machines

Posted: Tuesday 2nd January 2007

When selecting an ice machine for use in the hospital environment, it is important to consider its design and maintenance from the perspective of infection control. The Scotsman TC180, available from Camlab, is designed to minimise infection risks and facilitate cleaning.

Ice is made from fresh mains water in inverted freezing cups to minimise the possibility of contamination, producing very hard, clear, hygienic ice at minus 25C. Storage is in an insulated, easy-to-clean internal storage bin and the flow of ice is "first in, first out" to minimise the time that ice is held in storage. Dispensing is totally hands free - the machine senses the presence of an ice container automatically. Cleaning and sanitising are easy with the fully illustrated instructions provided - the Cleankill range of disinfection products, recommended by Camlab, have proven effectiveness against resistant micro-organisms such as MRSA.
