Hydrolab launch Blue Green Algae sensor

Posted: Friday 3rd February 2006
OTT Hydrometry are pleased to announce the release of the World’s first multiparameter water quality monitor capable of giving a quick and reliable system to monitor and log Blue-Green Algae (Cyanobacteria).
Blue-Green Algae is the common name for Cyanobacteria, a naturally occurring organism which, in high concentrations in water bodies can form “blooms” and scums. These can be harmful to humans and animals.
Cyanobacteria occur in two forms, Phycocyanin (PC) in fresh water and Phycoerythrin (PE), the most common form in marine water. Sensors are available to measure both types.
After years of research and collaboration with Turner Designs (USA) Hydrolab can now incorporate the sensor into an existing Series 4a instruments and at the same time upgrade the unit to the latest specification or alternatively supply a complete monitoring systems in the new Series 5 or 5X instrument.
The series 5 multiparameter system can measure up to 16 different parameters simultaneously and with the new self cleaning system incorporated into the Series 5X work unattended for several weeks depending on the levels of pollution.
Benefits of the new sensor include:
- Early quantitative detection of harmful algae blooms before the become a problem
- Signalling the need for corrective action water treatment before unsafe conditions arise
- Differentiate harmful algae bloom from non-toxic algae
