Betterhanger colliery site gets GPS Protecta-line

Posted: Wednesday 1st March 2006

The Protecta-Line® PE barrier pipe system, produced by GPS, is a vital component in Southern Water’s drinking water supply to the UK’s largest colliery regeneration site, at Betteshanger, Kent.

Construction services provided by Clancy-Dowcra have installed over 3km of Protecta-Line® at 125mm diameter, for feeder mains, with the system’s 180mm size connecting the site to the main pipeline. The polyethylene barrier pipe system is approved for use in water distribution, to exclude any volatile contaminants, or other chemicals that may potentially remain in the ground.

The former colliery at Betteshanger and its adjacent tip site are undergoing redevelopment as part of English Partnerships’ Naional Coalfields Programme and South East England Development Agency’s (SEEDA) programme to regenerate East Kent's coalfields. The site, when it opens in Spring 2006, will include commercial premises, sports and leisure facilities, a cycle track and an 85 hectare country park.

A business park will create up to 22,300 sq mtrs of employment space, with provision for small businesses to stimulate the local economy. The aim is to provide a suitable site for a range of businesses in a high quality environment and Protecta-Line® has a vital role in preventing any possible contamination of the drinking water supply from the ground. This is one of several brownfield redevelopment projects for which Southern Water has adopted GPS’s Protecta-Line® system.

The infrastructure work at Betteshanger is essentially finished. It is the largest site in the Kent Coalfield Programme and by the end of 2005 will have received up to £18.8 million of investment from national regeneration agency English Partnerships.

GPS is a division of Glynwed Pipe Systems Ltd, an Aliaxis Company, and is dedicated to the manufacture and supply of polyethylene pipe systems for gas and water transportation in the utilities and industrial markets.
