Water UK chairman to step down

Posted: Monday 6th May 2013

Peter Simpson, Water UK’s Chairman, has today announced his intention to step down from the chairmanship of Water UK this summer.

Peter, who is Managing Director of Anglian Water, took the chair of Water UK in 2012 on the understanding that he would review the position after one year. Peter now wishes to focus on leading Anglian Water’s preparations for the forthcoming Price Review.

Water UK’s Board wishes to place on record its appreciation and gratitude to Peter for his leadership of Water UK’s Board and to thank him for the considerable time he has devoted to this role during challenging times. All members of the Board look forward to continuing to work alongside Peter on the Board in future.

Meanwhile, underlining Peter’s sentiments for the need for water company senior people to have the time to devote to the forthcoming price review, Water UK’s Board has decided to seek an independent chair for Water UK to take over once Peter steps down.

Commenting, Peter Simpson said:

“I have enjoyed the challenge of chairing Water UK and I look back on our achievements together with real satisfaction. In addition to seeing through the challenge of moving forward on licence modifications, I am particularly pleased with our work in response to the drought which has really moved things forward.

"I was involved in setting up, and sitting on, the National Drought Management Group and worked closely with the industry on not only the response to the drought, but pursuing a legacy which now includes Defra proposing a possible resilience duty for Ofwat, and a minimum level of service for water resource management plans. And I am pleased to have successfully encouraged Water UK to open its membership to new entrants.

"I will continue to serve on the Government’s High Level Group on market reform, on which I serve at the request of the Minister. I have a strong commitment to making progress on the introduction of non-household retail competition.

"I would like to thank the Board and Council for members’ support and commitment to Water UK – it has been a pleasure to work with them. And I would like to thank Pamela and the Water UK staff team for their dedication and support throughout my time as chairman."

Commenting, Water UK’s Board announced:

“We would like to place on record our thanks to Peter for his real commitment and dedication to Water UK, and to thank him for his many achievements which have been delivered at a time of real challenge and change. The time and energy that Peter has given has been remarkable, and we will miss his significant contribution as our chair.

"We understand Peter’s reasons for wanting to step down, and in particular we understand his desire to commit additional time to Anglian Water and the Price Review. Indeed, in recognising this, we have concluded that in future Water UK will be best served by an independent chairman and we will be making arrangements to achieve this.”
