South East Water unveils new state-of-the-art laboratory

Posted: Friday 18th March 2016

Hot on the heels of a glowing United Kingdom Accreditation Service report, scientists at a new water testing laboratory are celebrating its official opening.

MP for Aldershot, Sir Gerald Howarth, joined South East Water employees, industry experts and representatives from the water company's commercial customers, to open the purpose built facility at Southwood in Farnborough last week (26 February).

Starting out as an empty warehouse, the 30,000 square foot location has been transformed into a state-of-the-art laboratory, with carefully designed areas for microbiology, organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry and cryptosporidium.

From here scientists will carry out more than 700,000 tests each year, ensuring South East Water customers' tap water is among the very best in the world and offering a bespoke analytical service to a wide range of businesses.

Dr Neil Hudson, Head of Water Quality at South East Water, said: "Moving a laboratory is no easy task and I am proud of our employees and the hard work they put in to maintaining a first class water testing service while relocating from our old base.

"The new laboratory will be open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, carrying out tests on water samples for a whole range of contaminants that can affect the quality of tap water.

"Our services are highly regulated and a recent visit from the United Kingdom Accreditation Service found we had improved our analytical excellence despite the upheaval to new premises."

The laboratory supports a wide range of businesses including other water companies, blue chip firms, environmental health organisations, private water suppliers and building maintenance companies.
