GiveMeTap - The eco-logical way for people to stay hydrated.

A young entrepreneur, studying at Manchester University, has scooped a national award after setting up a business that provides access to fresh water for people on the go. GiveMeTap enables the Manchester public to stay hydrated without having to fork out cash for bottled water, whilst also helping the environment by reducing the number of discarded plastic water bottles.

Edwin Broni-Mensah aged 25, impressed the panel of judges in the Shell LiveWIRE Grand Ideas Awards with his business idea and has been awarded £1,000 to develop GiveMeTap.

Motivated by the fact that England has some of the best water in the world yet access to it on the go was virtually impossible, Edwin set up GiveMeTap as a solution to provide Manchester with accessible water and help save the environment at the same time. The programme invites Manchester based restaurant and café owners to sign up and supply free access to clean tap water to those who carry a £7 GiveMeTap aluminium bottle, which can be purchased directly from the GiveMeTap website

The free water refills are currently available in 26 outlets in Manchester and can be located via the GiveMeTap mapping service on the company’s website. GiveMeTap is so passionate about providing everyone across the globe with access to fresh water that 70% of its profits go to fund independent water projects in the regions where it is needed most.

The Shell LiveWIRE Grand Idea Awards, launched in 2009 against the backdrop of the recession, are designed to give aspiring entrepreneurs a no-strings-attached financial boost of £1,000 to help them get their business ideas off the ground. The awards are held monthly and entrepreneurs from all over the UK can submit their entries through the LiveWIRE website.

Edwin Broni-Mensah, founder of GiveMeTap, comments: “In this economical environment many young entrepreneurs are put off starting up a business. For Edwin, the dream is to expand the business so that GiveMeTap will be available to every city in the United Kingdom, and then eventually, worldwide. His £1,000 cash prize will be injected back into the business to create an IPhone application that will provide his customers with instant information on GiveMeTap outlets.

Previous Grand Ideas winners include Luke Jefferson, 29, who set up Scratchface, a company which develops accessibility software to help colourblind people better perceive, understand and interact with colour on a computer. The award enabled Luke and his business partner to launch their first product on the Apple iPhone via Apple’s app store and the resulting publicity helped them to attract a new investor.
