Wrekin Products is delighted to announce that it has successfully won a tender to deliver a four-year framework of manhole covers and surface boxes for Scottish Water, the statutory corporation that provides water and sewerage services across Scotland.

Wrekin’s high performance Unite manhole cover is included in the contract which was won through competitive tender. Covers being deployed in areas of frequent access will be fitted with Wrekin’s HALO hinge.

The leading UK designer, manufacturer and supplier of specialist products for the civil engineering industry has been told it scored an outstanding 95.03% in the assessment of technical and practical details.

The company’s Scottish warehouse, based in Linlithgow, is ideally placed for servicing across Scotland. It is easily accessible from most of the country and Wrekin Products’ investment in stock holding will help ensure it delivers a great service.

Unite is a well-proven cover, already used in thousands of heavily trafficked locations by utilities organisations including Yorkshire Water and Thames Water.

Benefits will also be delivered under this contract by the HALO hinge. This offers the unrivalled ability to users of being able to single-handedly access the infrastructure below using standard lifting keys - but only enabling them to lift the covers out when it is safe to do so. Patented safety lifting provisions make this possible.

HALO removes the need for turret-style hinge housing which are so often used on hinged access covers. Turrets are known to be a focus for crack initiation, and often make it very difficult to compact surface finishes.

The Unite cover is full of patented design features that combine to give it the longest life and therefore lowest whole life cost of any D400 access cover. It exceeds both BS EN 124:2015 and HA 104/09 requirements.

To increase surface contact with bedding materials, the underside of the Unite frame features an engineered tread pattern, and to inhibit crack initiation, all contours of the frame, where it engages with the bedding materials, are fully rounded – both patented features unique to this product range.

Longer cover life reduces the need for replacement products, cutting the cost of re-installation and the wider disruption to society.

Commenting on the Scottish Water award, Wrekin Products Sales Director Simon Turner says: “Our high-quality, innovative products which will help reduce maintenance costs and disruption, coupled with our Scottish warehouse and proven track record, enabled us to demonstrate we will provide an unrivalled service to Scottish Water.

“We look forward to helping Scottish Water provide an efficient and effective service.”

Wrekin Products is a UK leader in the design, manufacture and design of ductile iron access covers and gully grates and of a full range of steel access covers. The Lichfield-based company is also one of the UK’s premier suppliers of geosynthetics for civil engineering, offering a range of solutions for ground stabilisation, reinforcement, erosion control, drainage, environmental protection, grass protection and weed suppression.
