Tri-Way helps solve gully grate theft for utilities

Posted: Thursday 21st November 2013

Wrekin Products’ intelligently designed Tri-Way gully grate is helping to solve the increasingly serious problem of gully grate theft, noise and wear for highways and utilities companies.

The issue of gully grate theft is very real and growing. In April 2012, The Liverpool Echo reported that the cost of metal theft to Liverpool City Council had quadrupled from 2009.

Working with Liverpool City Council, Amey had trialled various other manufacturers’ products to try and solve the problems of theft, shorter life span and noise but failed to solve all of these problems with one solution.

In 2012, Amey approached Wrekin Products to trial the Tri-Way gully grate and found it solved the problems they had previously experienced with conventional and composite designs.

John Davies, Operational Highways Manager at Amey Liverpool said: “We changed our choice of gully grates on several occasions before we trialled Wrekin Products Tri-Way gully grate. Since installing Tri-Way the problem of rattling gully grates and gully grate theft in the area has been reduced. Based on these results we have been more than happy to use Tri-Way across the city.”

Simon Turner, Wrekin Products’ sales director added: “We knew through working closely with Amey Utilities and Councils in Liverpool, Birmingham and Sheffield, that the problems with conventional gully grates were not solved by the products already available in the market.

“Where Wrekin Products’ intelligent design and innovation of the Tri-Way gully grate and its patented articulated coupling really wins is that it combines the advantages of both traffic-stable double triangular and single-piece opening types of design without the disadvantages of either.”

The Tri-Way gully grate is only available through builders’ merchants.
