Rainwater harvesting reaches new peak!

Snowdon ( Yr Wyddfa ) at 1085 metres is the highest mountain in Wales and

England. Her grandeur dominates the surrounding mountains and, on a clear day, provides views to Anglesey, Pembrokeshire and Ireland.

The familiar café on the summit has provided many of the 350,000 visitors each year with welcome shelter and refreshments.

The Snowdonia National Park Authority are substantially refurbishing this building to provide an high quality facility; new café, kitchen, shop and toilets.

To reduce the consumption of drinking water taken up by train, rainwater will be captured, stored and utilised using the SPEL RainSave System. This provides 10,000 litres of storage capacity with pre-storage filtration. The system is a direct pressure system with inline filtration (10 micron and activated carbon) and ultra-violet disinfection. It will provide water for toilet flushing, hand washing, cleaning down etc.

Rainwater harvesting is becoming a cost saving reality in many industrial and commercial applications (bus washing facilities, botanical gardens), schools and colleges.

SPEL Products have considerable experience in the larger schemes utilising their large range of SPEL Tankstor underground tanks of 2,000 – 300,000 litre capacity, or multiples thereof, filament wound in glass reinforced plastic. Where surface water runoff is required to be attenuated, SPEL Products design and manufacture StormBrake attenuation tanks with additional rainwater storage capacity providing a very cost effective solution both ways. Where catchment areas include surface areas eg car parks, a SPEL fuel/oil class 1 Separator can be installed to remove hydrocarbons in the rainwater runoff.

Planning Authorities are also looking to see rainwater harvesting and utilisation on new developments.
