Poundstretcher picks Polypipe’s Ridgistorm-XL Saddle for rapid on-site solution

Posted: Thursday 29th November 2012

Polypipe, the UK’s leading manufacturer of surface water drainage, sewerage, cable protection systems and water management solutions, has demonstrated the benefits of its Ridgistorm-XL Saddle during the installation of a value engineered drainage and attenuation solution at Poundstretcher’s new £36million storage and distribution centre in Kirby Muxloe, Leicestershire.

Main contractor Hallam Contracts had a requirement for a number of water management applications for this particular project. While installing Polypipe’s Ridgistorm-XL large diameter pipe as a main drainage run, they required a rapid on-site solution to accommodate the fact that the locations of lateral drain connections could not be determined prior to the pipe being installed.

Polypipe’s specialist water management solutions team swiftly recommended the use of their new Ridgistorm-XL Saddles to connect the drains retrospectively, enabling the installation of the main drainage run to continue to schedule.

“The helpful advice to use Polypipe’s Ridgistorm-XL Saddles allowed us greater flexibility in the installation process for this particular project,” comments Contracts Manager Peter Stuart at Hallam Contracts.

“Without being able to connect the lateral drains until after installation of the main pipe run, the project would’ve undoubtedly taken longer to complete. However the use of the Ridgistorm-XL Saddles offered us a leak-tight and secure connection with shorter lead times and minimum disruption.”

The project, which involved diverting excess rainwater from the roof of the new distribution centre into a bespoke, oversized attenuation tank via gullies and downpipes, required a number of Polypipe’s market-leading water management products, including 1,400m of Ridgistorm-XL large diameter pipe in various diameters, 124 Ridgistorm-XL Saddles plus Polystorm modular cell units providing both drainage and water storage and over 160m of Ridgidrain drainage pipe.

Hallam Contracts Manager Peter Stuart added: “Polypipe’s water management solutions team listened carefully to our needs and were able to design and supply a range of bespoke products that were fit-for-purpose”.

Working closely with structural and civil engineering consultancy The Diamond Wood Partnership at early design stage, Polypipe’s water management solutions’ technical team were able to design a 1050mm Ridgistorm-XL pipe within the drainage run, which featured six 225mm diameter pre-fabricated connections. This easy to install solution removed the need for a complicated manifold system into the Polystorm attenuation tank by taking the water directly through the main drainage run, thus maintaining the hydraulics of the system.

Polypipe’s civils and infrastructure specialists also value engineered the Ridgistorm-XL pipes to provide different ring stiffness classifications, meaning that the project benefitted from cost effective and structurally sound pipe for each run.

Emma Thompson, Marketing Communications Manager at Polypipe added: “We were delighted to work with Hallam Contracts and The Diamond Wood Partnership on the Poundstretcher development.

“This project is a great example of how our products offer the flexibility to overcome problems at complex sites. Our ability to value engineer the project highlights the cost and time savings that can be achieved by devising application-specific drainage systems.”

The new distribution centre will assist the supply of goods to more than 400 Poundstretcher stores across the UK.
