Polypipe WMS Supplies Holistic SUDS Solution for Prison Extension

Posted: Friday 23rd October 2009

Polypipe Water Management Solutions (WMS), the UK’s leading manufacturer of sustainable drainage and water management solutions has recently supplied a holistic SUDS solution with a contract value of £170,000 as part of a Prison extension scheme.

Polypipe WMS re-engineered the original drainage specification from corrugated steel to its structured-wall Ridgidrain pipe, supplying over 7km in total. As part of the holistic water management solution used on-site, eight Eco-Vat Rainwater Harvesting tanks (one with a 40,000 litre capacity and seven with a 9,000 litre capacity) were installed in addition to 2200 Polystorm cells to create an attenuation structure with a total capacity of over 400,000 litres.

As part of the Eco-Vat system which was used to collect and recycle rainwater from two new prisoner blocks, an entrance building and the central building at the development for reuse in toilet flushing, Polypipe WMS also supplied leaf filters and bespoke control systems. Three Eco-Vat tanks were required to feed just one header tank, with a control system that would then allow water to be drawn from a preferred tank, depending on the water levels.

Difficult site conditions caused by a high water table, marshy ground and contamination caused by a former ammunitions dump on-site has required in-depth design and technical support from Polypipe WMS. To avoid the issue of siltation within the Polystorm attenuation structure, seven individual tanks were designed to connect to the main drain.

Polypipe WMS was awarded the contract to supply the holistic SUDS solution due to its comprehensive range of water management products, product expertise and the design and technical support services that were provided to the contractor.

Steve Carter, WMS Specification Manager for Polypipe WMS involved with the project adds:

“The team has put in a lot of work on this project and we’re delighted to be supplying the attenuation, rainwater harvesting and drainage products for such a well-known project. As a leading manufacturer focused solely on the sustainable drainage and water management industry, we aim to provide our customers with expert advice, supported by a wide range of products which meet their project requirements.”
