Leading the way in environmental compliance with Lanes and Aqua Sentry

Posted: Friday 11th March 2011

Yorkshire-based transformer manufacturer, Winder Power Ltd, is the first site in Europe to install a revolutionary web-interfaced interceptor monitor, thanks to Lanes for Drains and its pollution prevention and spill control partner, Aqua Sentry.

The web notification-based interceptor monitor and alarm system recognises high oil levels in interceptors, and triggers an alarm which immediately closes a Flap Stopper™ device, sealing the site within seconds.

The system ensures that Winder’s site is protected from oil spill incidents, 24- hours a day, 365-days a year.

Winder’s SHEQ manager, Chris Brookes, explains: “Our ISO14001 audit showed that we had good safety protocols in place for drainage and oil spill control, but that we could be vulnerable at weekends and nights when there was no one on site.

“We asked Lanes, our drainage consultant, to look at ways in which we could increase that protection. Happily for us, Lanes has a partnership with Aqua Sentry and, together, they came up with this revolutionary web-based monitor, alarm and shut-off solution.

“It gives us complete confidence because it works round the clock and, if the alarm activates and shuts down the site, the system automatically e-mails or texts up to 12 nominated people via the web server — including Lanes — ensuring that we are able to resolve any oil spill issues quickly.

“It even links straight into the Lanes’ emergency response system for emptying the interceptors.”

There is another benefit to having a Flap Stopper device, as Chris points out:

“We can seal the site manually every time we take deliveries of oil. Once the delivery has been made safely, we open it to release the flow again. It is a real belts and braces safety product.

“This product has seen us take another major step in our commitment to maintaining the ISO 14001 Environmental Management Standard. As far as we are aware, this is the best system available on the market.

“It really is the way forward for any company which handles oil and needs to protect the business from oil spillages, and which is looking to achieve BS EN ISO 14001 status.

“I think it could well become the benchmark for all environmentally responsible companies which handle oil.”

Rob Staines, director of Aqua Sentry, says: “This alarm is revolutionising the interceptor monitoring market place.”
