Kijlstra precast mega-order for A1 upgrade

Posted: Friday 28th October 2016

Kijlstra is supplying the A1 Leeming to Barton Improvement Scheme with one of the largest orders it has ever received for its precast square manholes. The Highways England scheme is being delivered by the Carillion Morgan Sindall joint venture.

Once completed the scheme will unlock growth and boost the economy by creating a continuous motorway-standard route between London and Newcastle (including the M1 and A1M). It will also improve journey times and increase safety.

As part of this project, Kijlstra have supplied 850 precast manholes in a variety of sizes so far, in an order worth at least £1m.

The Kijlstra products were chosen because the client wanted an off-site solution that would reduce time spent on site.

"We started supplying the products in November 2014 and will probably be supplying them for another few months," says Kijlstra's UK Sales Manager Billy Fairhurst.

"It's a very complicated project - we're effectively supplying 26 different sites along the route," he says. The Carillion Morgan Sindall joint venture calls off the manholes as and when they are needed, explains Billy.

"I can't say exactly how many manholes we'll supply by the end of the scheme. We just need to ensure that they are available when the client needs them." The manholes are supplied in a number of different sizes, depending on the specification.

Manufactured at Kijlstra's UK plant in Henlade, Somerset they are able to offer an even faster turnaround.
