Already established as Britain's second largest group of ports,Peel Portshas five major strategically located UK gateways one of which is the Port of Sheerness which lies on the River Medway in Kent.

At this particular site water is distributed and used for everything, from supply to refrigerated cold stores to coffee machines. In an effort to reduce overheads, rather than using mains water, the water supply was being extracted from an existing borehole located within the site. The borehole had the capability to produce up to 48 m3/hr so considerable savings were being achieved.

However, as with many boreholes, as they age it is not unusual for them to produce solids that over a period of time settle out in the existing water tower resulting in a huge annual bill for cleaning and maintenance.

Industrial Purification Systems (IPS), a leader in water filtration engineering, was tasked to provide a low maintenance, cost effective water filtration system to process this distribution of water by removing the solids before the water was chlorinated and entered the distribution system.

Andy Evans, director at IPS, said: “There are a number of ways that this type of borehole problem can be tackled. We always start from a scientific approach whereby we conduct an extensive particulate analysis of the water to establish the actual challenges rather than make any assumptions. This then results in a water filtration system that is appropriately engineered to a client’s application and needs rather than adopting a broad brush approach. This also means the client can be confident of a successful conclusion.”

IPS installed an Amiad SAF 1500 automatic backwashing screen which processed the water to the existing tower at a rate of 45 m3/hr filtered to 20 micron. This effectively ensured a clean water supply to the whole docks.

The waste backwash stream from the SAF was diverted to a 500 litre buffer storage tank prior to being discharged under gravity to a paper band filter. This enabled the solids that would have entered the tower to be processed with the minimum of effort by the existing maintenance crew. The band filter system and SAF filter incorporated telemetry for remote monitoring of the system status.

“Peel Ports saw the opportunity to generally improve water quality whilst at the same time remove a tedious and expensive maintenance process for a small investment”, Andy explains. “The filter system we have designed and installed will provide the client with a return of investment in less than 18 months.”
