Hydrok’s rapid solution helps South West Water

Posted: Monday 13th February 2012

Hydrok, working in association with contractor Balfour Beatty, helped resolve a ‘critical works’ issue for South West water at their Goonhavern WwTW, Cornwall. A rapid turn-key solution was developed and implemented to minimise the interruption to the operational ability of the small local plant. The site had an existing circular Activated Sludge treatment plant needing refurbishment which, under normal circumstances, would require 5 weeks to complete, during this time all sewage waste would have to be tankered out at considerable cost. The Hydrok bespoke solution was to design a 6m x 2.8m diffuser lift out grid system using the ultra-efficient Aquaconsult Aerostrip® fine bubble diffusers, this would be manufactured at their factory in Cornwall prior to installation. The Hydrok Liftout Grid could then be transported and installed at the plant in a 3 day window of operation meaning there would only be a requirement for tankering for 3 days not 5 weeks, a considerable cost saving to SWW. The installation included all new pipe work with the existing blower being connected to the Hydrok Liftout Grid, the installation went to plan and Goonhavern WwTW was back on line and operational with minimum disruption to the service.

In addition to the new diffuser grid, the Hydrok engineers designed, manufactured and tested at their development facility, a bespoke scum removal system for the secondary settlement tank.

Dave Armstrong, Hydrok’s Engineering and Sales Director said “this was a turn-key project for South West Water which the Hydrok team are very pleased to have been involved with. It clearly demonstrates how savings can be made when refurbishing a WwTW which is deemed to have become a ‘critical works’, it also illustrates how refurbishment such as this can be resolved with minimum interruption the regular service”.
