Hydrok deliver “Innovations Scheme” for Severn Trent Water

Posted: Monday 26th April 2010

Severn Trent Water’s Framework contractor NMC Nomenca, appointed Hydrok UK Ltd to design a solution for Scotter WwTW in Lincolnshire. Deemed as an “Innovations Scheme”, the Scotter WwTW project allowed Severn Trent to deviate from their existing aeration framework with the aim to install innovative equipment and solutions.

The brief was to design a scheme to include blowers, air-main pipe work, valves and liftout grids within a single oxidation ditch. The incorporation of liftout grids would allow the diffusers to be inspected and maintained without the need to drain the tanks down or stop flow to the ditch.

This was the first aeration scheme Hydrok had undertaken for Severn Trent Water. Their solution was to design a two liftout grids system utilising the High Efficiency AEROSTRIP® diffusers from Aquaconsult. Each grid was specifically designed to treat the maximum flow, this would enable the second grid to be removed and inspected whilst still maintaining full process capability. The unique and flexible Hydrok design also allowed for future process expansion of the oxidation ditch to take place by simply removing the liftout grids and installing more of the high efficient diffusers to the grids. The AEROSTRIP® diffusers are extremely well suited to liftout applications due to their low buoyancy and large active surface area, combined with their innovative design to increase diffuser submergence. The Hydrok liftout grids are the most efficient on the market and the equipment took just two days to install.

Mark Lunn, Aeration Product Manager for Hydrok UK Ltd said “it was fantastic to be given the opportunity to supply and install our first aeration system for Severn Trent Water. It was important for Hydrok to be able to beat the existing framework supplier and our competitors on price, efficiency, innovative thinking and robust design. Being an “innovative site” it allowed us to prove to Severn Trent Water how much more efficient our AEROSTRIP® diffusers are compared to other standard diffusers currently offered by other suppliers.

Chris Webb of NMC Nomenca Limited said, “The service provided by Hydrok from proposal stage through to commissioning was completed to both a high professional standard and a timely manner”

Following the completion of Scotter WwTW, the successful working relationship Hydrok has established with NMC Nomenca , lead to Hydrok also being engaged in their first aeration contract for South West Water late in 2009 at the new Boscastle WwTW in Cornwall. Mark Lunn commented “The Boscastle WwTW is similar in design to Scotter WwTW. The efficient and flexible design and work ethics Hydrok employed at Scotter WwTW went a long way to help secure our first contract for South West Water in conjunction with NMC Nomenca”.
