HRS supply Vertical mounting digester sludge heaters to Severn Trent

Posted: Monday 30th August 2010

HRS Heat Exchangers, who are one of Europe’s leading suppliers of heat exchangers and ancillary equipment to the wastewater treatment industry, has recently supplied two vertically mounting HRS-DTI Corrugated Tube in Tube heat exchangers to Severn Trent Water for heating of digester sludge in an anaerobic digestion application.

The Severn Trent STW in Gloucestershire has two existing plantrooms, one for each of the two digesters; the new HRS units each provide 543kW of heating.

HRS staff visited the site and carried out a survey with members from the Severn Trent engineering team, during this survey it was quickly discovered that the room available for the new heat exchangers was extremely limited; HRS design engineers overcame the space issue by offering Severn Trent a compact vertical mounting heat exchanger with a very small footprint area, this small footprint allowed Severn Trent to install the new HRS units in the existing plant rooms avoiding costly and labour intensive external mounting or plantroom modifications.

The two new HRS-DTI exchangers have been supplied to replace the existing spiral heat exchangers which were causing serious problems due to blocking on raggy sludge and inefficient operation.
