Honeywell water balancing and scald protection valves installed on HMS Queen Elizabeth, the Royal Navy’s new aircraft carrier

Honeywell water control valves are being installed on the Royal Navy’s new aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth, to ensure uniform ideal water pressures automatically at all domestic water outlets and to prevent excessively hot water in baths, showers and wash basins.

The marine engineering valve specialist Score Marine Limited is installing 50 Honeywell Kombi 4 throttle valves for automatic hot water balancing and 142 Honeywell TM200VP thermostatic mixing valves on the ship – the largest ever built for the Royal Navy.

The Kombi 4 throttle valve is small, costs less than other auto balancing systems, and is easily fitted. The Honeywell TM200VP is certified to the highest Buildcert standard for thermostatic mixing valves, TMV3, and ensures a constant safe temperature at the point of delivery by blending hot and cold supplies to provide a uniform, safe preset temperature.

Domestic hot water on the ship will be stored at least 60degrees C to avoid legionella and distributed at 50degrees C minimum, which is dangerously hot for bathers. So the Honeywell TM200VP fail-safe mixing valves are essential at the outlet to prevent scalding.

The Kombi 4 throttle valves have a thermal disinfection feature: when water at over 70 degrees C is flushed through the system periodically for thermal disinfection against legionella, they open further automatically to ensure hot water is rapidly distributed in all risers and pipelines, whilst maintaining the balance. They return automatically to their usual control state when the water temperature falls to normal.

HMS Queen Elizabeth will weigh 65,000 tonnes, will be 280 metres (920 ft) long and will be capable of carrying a range of fast jets and helicopters.
