Hanson Formpave’s Aquaflow Provides SUDS Solution at Craigmillar, Edinburgh

Posted: Thursday 23rd April 2009

Hanson Formpave, manufacturers of specialist concrete paving products, has installed 5,000m2 of the first quota of its industry-leading Aquaflow™ permeable paving and SUDS solution to Edinburgh City Council for use in a large regeneration development at Craigmillar. Since the completion of the first phase, developers have noted a significant increase in consumer desire and interest for housing in this area.

A 15 year urban regeneration programme is currently underway at Craigmillar to radically enhance and renew the area for the local population. Landscape, architecture and sustainability are at the core of the development with a huge emphasis on reducing the impact on the environment. Hanson Formpave has recently supplied 5,000m2 of the exclusive and environmentally friendly permeable paving and SUDS solution Aquaflow to the development. Aquaflow was chosen for Craigmillar by the local authority as a sustainable solution to managing surface water issues and a further 20,000m2 isscheduled to be laid during the next phases.

“Criagmillar is a pioneering adoptable development in Scotland that is leading the way in sustainable and environmental development,” said Ian Johnston, Senior Engineer with URS Consulting Engineers for phase 1 of the project. “The Aquaflow permeable surface passed all the stringent checks and criteria for road adoption enabling Edinburgh City Council to be the first local authority in Scotland to adopt a permeable paved road system.”

Bill Armstrong, construction manager, EDI Group the property developers at Craigmillar said, “we required a highly reliable and sustainable paving system that offered a SUDS solution to comply with SEPA requirements. Hanson Formpave’s Aquaflow permeable paving effectively distributes water around the site eliminating the need to use ponds or wetlands or other space consuming SUDS solutions within the development. We conducted extensive research during the design phase and our conclusion showed that Aquaflow is the best SUDS and longest established permeable paving solution on the market. Since installation it has performed extremely well.”

“We also insisted that our supplier be well established, experienced in permeable paving and be able to meet our product demands and phasing for the duration of the building,” Bill added.

“Aquaflow is an ideal permeable paving solution for this type of high profile development. The colour palate and workable, maintainable surface generates an attractive finish that satisfied Edinburgh City Council’s criteria,” said Peter Johns, national specification manager at Hanson Formpave.

The Hanson Formpave system allows rain to infiltrate through a permeable concrete block paved surface into a unique stone sub-base where it is cleaned, by filtration and microbial action, before being released in a controlled manner into sewers or water courses, or infiltrated directly into the sub-grade. Aquaflow paving blocks can be used in conjunction with either tanked or infiltration systems.

SEPA has requirements for two-stage treatment, pollutant removal and volume attenuation of all surface run-off water (from permeable and non-permeable areas) and single stage treatment, volume attenuation for roof water. SEPA also stipulates that the costs of construction must be no greater than that of traditional drainage systems. The fact that these requirements are met by the Hanson Formpave system enables SEPA to confidently accept them as a permeable paving supply for projects requiring their approval.
