Durapipe UK’s leading pre-insulated pipework system, Duracool, has been specified as part of an offshore wind farm development close to Barrow-in-Furness.

Walney Offshore Wind Farm, located 15km off Walney Island, Cumbria, in the Irish Sea, comprises 51 modern, efficient wind turbines, with a total capacity of producing 367MW of electricity, providing power to approximately 320,000 homes per year.

The Port of Barrow provides a base for commissioning the wind farm and Associated British Ports, the owner and operator of the port, provided a pontoon for the crew service vessels. With over 100 maintenance staff working on the offshore site, they are transported to the wind farm by boat each day and require safe drinking water while aboard the transporter boats.

A pipework system was therefore needed to convey water to the onshore pontoon, which serves the transporter boats. Working to tight deadlines, contractors Yarl Hydracentre specified pre-insulated pipework system, Duracool, to supply the fresh water for the transporter boats.

Specified in sizes 32mm # 63mm, Duracool transports drinking water from the land based water main to the supply points on the pontoon. These supply points then offload the cold drinking water into the two vessels used to carry staff to the wind farm.

It was important the pipework was insulated to ensure the drinking water does not freeze in adverse weather conditions. As Duracool is pre-insulated ABS, it was the ideal option for Yarl Hydracentre as, in addition to fulfilling this requirement, it also meant installation was simple and efficient as no additional time or labour was needed to lag the pipework once on-site.

Managing director at Yarl Hydracentre, Duncan Wolley, comments: “This project was a unique one for us and one which required a cost-effective pipework system that could deliver sustainable, long-term solutions for the client.

“As Duracool is pre-insulated, installation was made much simpler and ensured time spent onsite was kept to a minimum. Additionally, because Duracool offered unrivalled corrosion resistant qualities, it has provided peace of mind that, despite its external location and exposure to weather and sea elements, Duracool will retain its effectiveness and offer longevity.”

Duracool is a pre-insulated ABS pipework system designed to provide a high quality insulation solution for pipework systems as well as delivering reduced installation costs. Insulation is provided through a polyurethane foam which is protected by an attractive polyethylene outer casing. The lightweight product is easy to install, and doesn’t require fitting by a specialist installer as neither hot works or manual lagging are required when installing the system.

Duracool is available in sizes 20mm # 90m – 225mm # 315mm and is ideal for a variety of industrial and building services applications.
