Drinking water in France – Successful replacement with horizontal inge modules in pressure vessels

In October 2018, inge GmbH in collaboration with its partner SUEZ’s aquasource* replaced the existing, competing single bore Ultrafiltration (UF) modules in a municipal water treatment plant in the town of Confolens in western France.

Two years previously, inge® had launched its dizzer® L module, which paved the way for using inge®’s tried-and-tested Multibore® membrane technology in systems that employ a horizontal UF configuration in pressure vessels. Since then, customers have been able to replace modules in their existing systems on a one-to-one basis.

The picturesque town of Confolens, which lies inland from La Rochelle, has a water treatment plant using UF technology since 2006 to produce drinking water from the nearby Vienne River for the town and surrounding villages. It currently supplies approximately 20,000 people in the municipality and surroundings with 4,800 m3/d of water per day.

In collaboration with SUEZ, inge®’s robust Multibore® membranes were installed as part of a three-and-a-half month pilot project, which put the membranes’ performance to the test under real-life conditions and with the real feed water. The results showed that Multibore® membranes were capable of producing consistently good filtrate quality even with variations in the quality of the feed water. Compared to the existing solution, the dizzer® L modules demonstrated significantly more stable operation and more consistent performance in the test phase. On this basis, the customer awarded the contract to inge® in October 2018, ordering 112 dizzer® L 0.9 MB 40 to be installed into 28 different pressure vessels.

The old modules have been replaced in January 2019. The treatment plant came back online immediately after loading the modules. Performance tests on site revealed excellent permeability in the range of 500-600 Lmh/bar at 20°C and no integrity defects.
