DeckSafe Solutions has supplied a range of anti-slip gratings for a floating modular pontoon system that accommodates three safety/rescue boats and a 60-person life raft at London City Airport.

The 24m x 18m pontoon was installed by Aqua-dock Limited – one of the UK’s leading specialists in the design and manufacture of floating structures for military, maritime, emergency services, industrial and commercial applications. In order to ensure the wellbeing of safety personnel in the event of an emergency at the airport, Aqua-dock specified the fitment of DeckSafe anti-slip GRP open mesh grating on the pontoon and its 7.5m x 2m wide access ramp.

DeckSafe Solutions’ open mesh grating panels are manufactured from composite fibreglass incorporating continuous glass fibre strands cured with industry-approved polyester resins. To ensure maximum grip underfoot, the grating has been tested in accordance with BS 7976-2 and certified as ‘providing an exceptional level of slip resistance, particularly beneficial in wet, oily and icy environments.’

DeckSafe supplied its popular green coloured grating for the extensive working and traffic area of the pontoon whilst the ramp was fitted with its grey coloured version. High visibility yellow edging was also incorporated for additional safety alongside perimeter handrails and toe boards. In common with all DeckSafe anti-slip products, the grating features high strength, lightweight and low maintenance properties. It is also corrosion resistant, UV stable and Euro Class 1 fire rated.

The Aqua-dock pontoon replaced a smaller existing installation that had failed a routine risk assessment. Assembly of the new pontoon was undertaken in a safe area of the dock away from aircraft traffic thereby overcoming any potential access and security problems. Once completed, the pontoon was simply towed into its final location alongside the airport’s main runway.

Commenting on the London City Airport installation, David Howard, Aqua-dock’s managing director, said, “This has been a fairly high profile project for us and, with a value of over £100,000, it was important that we got it right first time. That’s where DeckSafe Solutions was so important to us. Their products are first class – tough, rugged, reliable and easy to install. We first became aware of DeckSafe when we were joint exhibitors at a show in 2012 and we’ve worked successfully together on various contracts since.”
