Clearwater’s new Mercedes-Benz Arocs is a Master Blaster

Glasgow-based waste management specialist Clearwater is now running a unique
Mercedes-Benz truck equipped to tackle the toughest challenges in sewer clearance while saving many thousands of gallons of clean water a year.

Supplied by Central Belt Dealer Western Commercial, the 8x4 Arocs 3245 is fitted with the first Müller Canal Master Type II Recycler body in the UK.

The muscular Mercedes-Benz Arocs range is purpose-designed for the construction industry and related sectors requiring a chassis which is supremely robust as well as powerful and efficient.

Clearwater provides waste treatment, recycling and disposal services to industrial, commercial and municipal customers nationwide.

The latest addition to its 70-strong fleet has a comfortable ClassicSpace cab and an advanced 12.8-litre 330 kW (449 hp) straight-six engine driving through a smooth and flexible Mercedes PowerShift 3 automated transmission. The vehicle was also specified with heavy-duty 8.0-tonne front axles and uprated suspension.

Clearwater has been running Mercedes-Benz trucks for some years and currently operates ten, three of which entered service this year. Managing Director Murray Pitcairn said: “I expect to work these vehicles hard throughout England and Scotland for seven years.

“They’re being inspected and serviced under full Mercedes-Benz Repair and Maintenance Contracts by Western Commercial, which provides a very high level of service. Based on this, and on previous experience, I’ve every confidence that these new vehicles are fit for the task and will last the course.”

The new truck’s Müller body features a high-pressure pump that shifts 150 gallons of water per minute through specialist hose nozzles at pressures of up to 2500 psi to clear the toughest obstructions from sewage pipes. The dirty water is then drawn back into the vehicle’s tank through a large-bore pipe and vacuum pump for filtration, before being pumped back into the blocked sewer through the high-pressure hose, thus eliminating any wastage of clean water.

The pumps are powered from the truck’s engine via a PTO with transmission lock-out, saving the weight and cost of a donkey engine. The bodywork also incorporates essential health and comfort features for the driver, including hand-washing facilities and storage for PPE and other kit.

Mr Pitcairn has christened the new vehicle ‘Master Blaster’. He praises the ability of the Müller Canal Master Type II Recycler to handle the fat and rag obstructions frequently found in modern sewer systems, which would defeat lesser machines.

The body was fitted on the chassis at the Muller factory in Germany, a process that took 12 weeks to complete. The finished truck was then delivered to the UK for Individual Vehicle Approval before being put into service.

Representatives from Müller’s UK agent RoadVacs spent two days in Glasgow training Clearwater’s operatives in the use of the vehicle, and are due to deliver more ‘top-up’ training later in the year.
