Cleaning collapsed pipe leads to new repair service

Posted: Thursday 19th March 2009

The candle factory fire reported in Water Active February 2009 has led to a new service being offered by specialist industrial cleaning contractor Tube Tech International.

Tube Tech International was one of a number of contractors used by Wessex Water to remove the hardened candle wax which entered the drainage network of an industrial site in Dorset. Tube Tech, having worked with Wessex on a number of other contracts, was called in to remove candle wax from within a 225 id concrete rising main.

This section of the drainage system had proved difficult for other contractors as the 70 metres of pipe was 70% blocked along its entire length.

Using a bespoke cutter system Tube Tech were able to remove a significant amount of wax from the drain yet had to stand down on a number of occasions due to the integrity of the pipe. “We found a number of breaks along the length of the pipe line which naturally affected the effectiveness of our cutting equipment,” says Eamonn O’Connor, Sales Technician with Tube Tech International. “We stopped to have the holes repaired several times over the three day contract and continually filmed our progress.”

The pipe was mainly damaged along the bottom level which meant Tube Tech’s cutter system was sinking and had to be continually pulled out. Eventually it was decided that the pipe was just too damaged for Tube Tech to continue.

As a result of this contract and appreciating that pipe line structural problems can impact on the use of their innovative blockage removal service Tube Tech are now able to offer a ‘localised structural repair’ service to the water and sewerage sector.

“By being able to repair pipes as we are unblocking them means we can work faster and more effectively, ensuring that contracts run smoothly and to budget,” reports Eamonn.
