Another successful project, in another successful year

Posted: Monday 2nd March 2009

Leading Odour Control Cover manufacturers Kingsley Plastics Ltd have successfully completed the installation of the new GRP Covers to the Lane End STW for Black & Veatch Plc.

Lane End STW, a Thames Water site situated on the outskirts of Dartford near London, has recently undergone a complete modernisation and works upgrade including the construction of new Lamella Tanks. The new concrete Lamella tanks were constructed by the Black & Veatch/Costain JV with each of the 6 tanks measuring approximately 7.2 mtrs x 6.7 mtrs.

Within their design brief Kingsley were requested to design the covers in order to allow on-site personal full access onto the entire GRP covers whilst still incorporating a flat, non-slip surface as standard.

Other requirements included the incorporation of easily operable one-man access hatches complete with fully removable GRP safety grills plus an integral surface water drainage system. The covers themselves were designed for ease of access and to ultimately accommodate a design working load of in excess of 2.5 K/M2.

Manufactured off-site, all covers were complete within weeks of the official order being granted and approval of Kingsley’s own in-house design with on-site installation by their own engineers taking a minimal 8 days to complete the project with the full approval of Black & Veatch resident Site Manager Dave Hopley.

This contract completes a successful year for Kingsley Plastics not only within their GRP Odour Control Cover installations but also their Heavy Duty GRP Kiosks of which are becoming an increasing sight on every Waste Water & Sewage Water Treatment Works.

Other recent high profile GRP Cover contracts included the 2nd phase of Ringsend STW in Dublin, Ireland and the flagship Thames Water site of New Reading STW where covers were installed for both projects in excess of £300,000 each.

The style of covers used in the Lane End STW project, heavy duty non-slip flat GRP covers, are increasingly being specified by Water Co’s up & down the country due to the fact that they are indeed totally flat with absolutely no trip hazards like the usual design of covers using Beam & Infill panels.

Kevin Down, Managing Director of Kingsley Plastics added ‘The main advantages of utilising heavy duty covers over other styles in the market include that they compliment Health & Safety on site due to their totally flat design, their non-slip properties over the entire cover, endless shape orientation plus the reduced timescales involved with installation, thus offering our clients cost effective Covers with a reduction in installation times’.
