Anglian freshens up its fleet with Sprinters

Posted: Friday 23rd January 2009

Anglian Water is flushing out its old vans and cleaning up its image with a fleet of new vehicles from Mercedes-Benz.

The company, which services the needs of around six million domestic, commercial and industrial customers, has just taken delivery from Peterborough dealer Intercounty Truck & Van of 11 Sprinter 511CDIs.

The 5.0-tonne Mercedes have replaced vehicles by another manufacturer and joined a fleet of 65 vans, which includes 10 Sprinters from the previous model generation, engaged in drain maintenance and repair.

“Our older Sprinters have proved tough and reliable, and have never let us down,” confirms Fleet Manager Nigel Allen. “So we had no hesitation in placing the business with Mercedes-Benz when we came to freshen up our fleet.”

Anglian Water’s new Sprinters are a combination of Long and Medium-bodied models, all with high roofs and racking by specialist Bott, of Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Leicestershire.

Nine have high-pressure jetting units for flushing out drains, which were removed from the outgoing vehicles and refitted by Rioned/Wards UK, of Mildenhall, Suffolk. The other two are equipped with CCTV cameras for locating blockages.

A twelfth Sprinter, due to be delivered shortly by Intercounty, will also be racked out by Bott before being sent to Rioned’s Dutch headquarters, where it will be fitted with a new jetting unit.

Mr Allen continues: “Our Sprinters operate close to the full 5.0-tonne gross weight but with their twin rear wheels handle the weight without difficulty.

“In fact, our engineers are delighted with their new Sprinters, finding them even more comfortable and easy to drive than the previous model. We particularly like the ergonomics in the cab, with everything in the right place.”

‘Whole life’ operating costs are also important to Anglian Water, with the Sprinter scoring highly for its long service intervals and high residual prices, as well as its reliability.

Anglian Water’s vans operate throughout the east of England, from the Humber to the Thames, and are maintained at its seven workshops. The fact that the Sprinter comes with an unlimited mileage, three-year warranty is another major plus.

No less important to Anglian Water is the Sprinter’s arsenal of active and passive safety features, designed to offer the highest possible degree of protection to vehicle occupants and other road users. These include the latest Adaptive version of the ESP® anti-skid system, which dynamically monitors the vehicle’s load status while it is on the move.
