AMOT thermostatic valves chosen for new Royal Navy carrier

Eleven AMOT Type B 6in bronze thermostatic control valves are to be installed on the new Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carrier for the main chilled water plants. The biggest and most powerful surface warships ever to be constructed for the Royal Navy, the HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince Of Wales are due to enter service in 2014 and 2016.

Key benefits of the B Valves are quoted as simple low-cost installation and maintenance with no external power source needed and few parts, along with a robust design withstanding high vibration and shock. Being supplied through refrigeration company J & E Hall, they will also provide a “fit and forget” solution as no user settings are needed.

The temperature control power is created by the expansion of a wax/copper mixture highly sensitive to temperature changes, creating large forces that constantly modulate the sliding valve to regulate flow and accurately control temperature. A further benefit is that the unit is not easily disturbed by pressure changes and sudden surges so that it maintains stable temperatures over a wide range of operating conditions.

The carriers are said to represent a step change in Royal Navy capability, enabling the delivery of increased strategic effect and influence around the world. They will be a key component of the improved expeditionary capabilities needed to confront the diverse range of threats in today’s security environment.
