Alutec provides the smart answer for Lincolnshire children’s centre

Posted: Monday 17th May 2010

When a rundown old school in Lincolnshire was completely refurbished, Marley Alutec’s Traditional Aluminium rainwater range provided the desired period look. The powder coated aluminium gutter and downpipes also ensured long-lasting maintenance-free performance and with a much more attractive lifetime cost than cast iron.

The building in Burgh-le-Marsh had been used as a community centre since the school closed in the 1980s, but it had not been maintained and was in a poor shape. Thanks to the efforts of the committee running the centre, funding was secured to make a fresh start and create a children’s centre with community facilities.

Although the old school is not listed, it is in a conservation area and a high specification for the materials used was required and that they should be in keeping with the traditional look of the building.

Rob Lowe of Robert Lowe Chartered Architects contacted Alutec and looked at several samples of guttering before selecting a half-round profile in moss green that toned with the colour scheme already used on some of the woodwork.

“We chose the Alutec guttering because it looked identical to traditional cast iron but at a much more attractive price,” says Rob Lowe.

Centre manager Lisa Broomfield, who has been involved with the project from the start is very happy with the result. “It looks very smart,” she said.

The majority of the funding came from the Heritage Lottery fund, with other financial support provided by Lincolnshire County Council, East Lindsey District Council, The European Regional Development Fund, Surestart and WREN. The new centre now hosts a day nursery, a tearoom, out of school clubs and community activities such as yoga, bingo and choir practices.
