£40 million Covenham to Boston Pipeline Project Set to Start

Posted: Friday 22nd June 2012

The first consignment of PE pipe has arrived on site at Covenham Reservoir ready for work to begin on Anglian Water’s Covenham to Boston water main project.

Designed by Mott McDonald and installed by JN Bentley, the project is one of 16 large capital investment projects planned by Anglian Water. Divided in two sections, this £40 million scheme involves the installation of a 60km trunk main from Covenham Reservoir to Boston in Lincolnshire, which, once completed, will help the water company ensure security of supply to homes and businesses. The first section is a 40km pipeline between Covenham and Miningsby Reservoirs which will be followed by a further 20km section from Miningsby Reservoir to Boston where it will be linked to the existing water distribution system.

As part of Anglian Water’s ‘Love Every Drop’ campaign, designed to highlight the impact of water consumption and climate change, the company challenged the project’s delivery partners to reduce the scheme’s embedded carbon by 50%. The follow-on collaborative specification process considered carbon footprint, cost, availability, technical performance and compliance of different pipe materials and resulted in Excel New Blue pipe from GPS PE Pipe Systems being specified for the first section of the main (the material for the second section is yet to be specified). GPS will supply 40km of 560mm at varying SDRs to accommodate the varying pressure of water flow along different sections of the pumped line. The ability to map the exact specification of pipe required to the pressure profile at different points along the main will help the delivery team further reduce the amount of raw materials required, answering the goals of the ‘Love Every Drop’ initiative.

JN Bentley expects to begin installing the pipe in early March in a largely open trench project with some trenchless installation under roads and in built up areas. The first 40km section of the main will be operational in early 2013.
